Hockey: Bath washed out of cup by Chichester

After a recovery week in the aftermath of the rollercoaster 5-4 loss to Fareham the week before, Chichester went into their England Hockey national cup game against Bath Buccaneers fresh and clear-headed.

Recharged Chichester attacked straight from the whistle with Martin Gough almost scoring within the first 30 seconds.

The trend continued as Jack Lerwill drove into the D numerous times, causing havoc in the Bath defence.

Chichester broke the deadlock 20 minutes into the half with a breakaway goal from Luke Emmett, who was in space at the top of the D to rifle a shot across goal low into the bottom corner.

The match slowed down, with Bath finding more of a foothold. A well-saved short corner by keeper Maciej Pacanowskiego and a late fizzing reverse-stick shot just wide were the only real chances in the remainder of the first half.

Feeling that they should be in a more commanding position, Chichester again came out firing with Jack Lerwill again causing the most problems – hitting the post twice within ten minutes of the restart.

Chichester made it 2-0 after another lovely counter-attack with Matt Cox threading a ball to Gough, who finished at the second attempt.

Bath, desperately trying to get back into the game, had a number of shots calmly palmed away by Pacanowskiego.

Great marking and composure from the back-line of Kieran Henn, Alex Thakore, Matt Sewell and Dan Brook – who had a terrific game carving open the left side of the pitch – frustrated them to the point of ill discipline with a number of their players receiving green and yellow cards.

To cap a great all-round performance from Chichester, with the opposition down to nine men, Sam Broadhurst carried the ball from the halfway line into the right of the D to calmy flick high over the onrushing goalkeeper for a brilliant individual goal.

There was even time for captain Kieran Henn to find himself in the opposition D only to have his reverse shot inadvertently tipped wide by Tom McCarthy at the back post – who blamed his return from injury for his clumsiness.
