Hockey kids are quick to pick up sticks at Bognor

The Regis School hosted a level two quicksticks hockey competition for Year 5 and 6 pupils.

Quicksticks is a form of hockey adapted to suit primary-age youngsters – with fewer players and bigger hockey balls.

Seven competitive teams from four schools – St Mary’s, Edward Bryant, Bishop Tuffnell and North Mundham – took part in the event run by school games organiser Sean O’Connor and supported by Middleton & Bognor HC coach Rachael McCartain.

She began by running through coaching skills and drills. The teams then played in a round-robin format, each playing seven matches which were umpired by Year 10 sports leaders from The Regis School.

McCartain said: “They were excellent umpires and did a really good job.”

The sports leaders continually impress – this year alone they have been involved in officiating at basketball, football, netball, rugby, badminton and now hockey events.

Overall winners were Bishop Tuffnell, who will represent the West Sussex West at the Sussex School Games on July 3, when more than 15 sports will be played.
