Hockey: Welsh woe for Chichester

The Welsh side are top of Conference West so it was always going to be a tough encounter but Chichester knew they would have an opportunity to pick up some points if they were at their best.

Cardiff had been 3-0 winners at Kingsham earlier in the campaign.

The game started at a frantic pace and Chichester struggled to sting their passes together.

Cardiff put Chichester under immediate pressure and soon took the lead through some good work down their right.

Although under intense pressure, Chichester did press forward and create a couple of half-chances but these were quickly snuffled out by the Cardiff defence.

Cardiff made it two before the break when a well-worked penalty corner was converted.

Chichester knew they had created their own problems by not turning up in the first half but, as previous weeks have shown, they have the ability to go up the gears in the second half.

Unfortunately it was not to be the case this week, as another penalty corner conceded and another goal through a simple flick down the middle of the goal increased the hosts’ lead.

Chichester decided to turn up at last in the 40th minute as a well-worked move involving Martin Gough and Tom McCarthy led to Sam Broadhurst flicking the ball into an empty net to make it 3-1.

With Chichester pressing forward they started to create chances and won a penalty corner, but a missed trap and the lack of a Chichester player backing up led to a fantastic breakaway goal from Cardiff.

Chichester picked up a late consultation through Martin Gough but it was too little too late.

The men from Kingsham have it all to do with eight league games to go.

Chichester’s last game before Christmas is this Sunday (1.30pm pushback at Kingsham) against the University of Birmingham, who were 5-3 winners in the sides’ previous encounter.

Chi will be keen to finish this half of the season on a high after a tough few months.

On the coldest weekend this season so far, Chichester got the better of Eastbourne.

Lying a couple places above Chichester, Eastbourne were set to be tough opponents. But Chichester were the strongest team on the day.

It started well, Chi passing and pushing forward at every opportunity. Their efforts were rewarded when Lindsay Hauxwell bagged her first.

Eastbourne pressed the Chi defence but were thwarted by Demelza Peake in the centre and Claire Young in goal.

Chichester’s second came a few minutes later, Sarah Jessop scoring at the end of a great passage of play.

The home side were on top. Julianne Doherty and Jenny Horton combining well down the right. The third goal, which summed up Chichester’s first half, was scored by Fern Holleyoak. 
After the break, Eastbourne came out with more determination but once again Young was a match for them.

Eastbourne did score when a great tackle from Doherty led to the ball looping over the goalie’s outstretched arms and just under the crossbar.

Chichester increased the lead again through Hauxwell.

Eastbourne’s heads were down and the home side made the most of this, playing some good hockey.

There were a few missed opportunities but the scoring was finished off by hard work and persistence. Trent scored again to make it 5-1.
