Hodd makes championship debut for Sussex

CRICKETING star Andrew Hodd made his County Championship debut last week.

The 22-year-old, who played much of his teenage cricket with Bexhill, kept wicket for Sussex in their Division One season opener against Warwickshire last week.

The former Bexhill High School and Bexhill College student took three catches during Warwickshire's first innings score of 449 at Hove.

He also struck two boundaries in making 18 from 78 balls batting at number seven in Sussex's first innings total of 302.

The contest ended in a draw when Sussex declared their second innings on 417-2 after former Zimbabwe Test ace Murray Goodwin and Hastings Priory's Mike Yardy set a new county record partnership for the third wicket of 385.

Hodd, a former England under-19 international, returned to his home county in the winter after spending two seasons with Surrey.

He had two previous first class appearances to his name, one for either county. His debut was for Sussex against Zimbabwe in 2003 and last year he played for Surrey against Bangladesh A, a match in which he scored a pair of half-centuries. Hodd has also made three one day appearances and one in a Twenty20 fixture.
