Hornets manager Dom Di Paola: ‘This was only one win’

He praised his players after they delivered a one-sided 4-1 win but warned against getting carried away with one result.

Di Paola said: “We’ve not been at our best for the last couple of games so it was good we saved it for that one.

“The boys seemed up for it today and wanted to show we are a good side and I think everyone was quality. I can’t fault anyone, we played really well.

“Lancing are a good side in their own right. Apart from Epsom (3-0 win in FA Vase) that’s well as we’ve played this season and Lancing caught on a good day.

“We were really focussed before the game and started well. It was really, really pleasing to be honest.”

Di Paola would not agree it was a hugely better squad than last season’s squad which was led by player-manager Gary Charman since they are now playing in a lower league.

He said: “It’s a different level so it’s hard to gauge.

“On paper we’ve got a really strong side and it’s a case of them being on it on the day.

“They are all good lads and are desperate to play and when they do they all give everything and we are lucky.”

The Hornets boss praised the game’s Man of the Match Jordan Clark for an assured display at centre back.

Di Poala said: “Jordan is a very talented player and I don’t think he’s had a bad game all season.

“We’ve had to play him at the back for a couple of games because we’re short.

“Joe Shelley had his best game of the season. Brad Lewis had his best game in the middle.

“I thought Terry Dodd was brilliant up-top. Darren Boswell did well till he came off and Charlie Farmer was up all night ill and scrambled through the game.

“He wanted to start but was out for the count at half-time and had to come off.

“It’s only one win which doesn’t really mean anything at this stage, we’ve got to keep winning.

“Everyone was saying it’s a six-pointer but it isn’t really, it’s three points towards a season.

“We’ve now got a game Tuesday and a game Saturday. We’ve got to keep going. We’ve got to keep driving on.

“We can’t think we’ve cracked it. If we’d have lost it would have only been three points.

“It’s important we don’t get too ahead of ourselves and be happy about the performance.”
