Horsham Bowls round-up: The Martlets add Sussex Triples title

The Martlets Short Mat Bowls Club continue to dominate the Sussex landscape after adding the West Sussex County Triples title to their ever-growing list of achievements.

Barrie Fitch, Mel Lillywhite and Marc Lancaster qualified from the initial group stages to then beat Neil Jackson’s triple from Chanctonbury Foxes in the quarter-finals.

A semi-final victory over Ben Haulkham’s (Infinity SMBC) team saw The Martlets side face a team from Bognor (skipped by Brian Mills) in the final, which the Martlets won 9-7 to retain their title.

There was a well-deserved league win for Horsham IBC Ladies over Adur IBC. Horsham took four of the six rinks, top rink going to Angela Dalrymple, Jill Webb, Fran Baillie and Linda Gladwell 23-13.

The annual match between Southwater and Horsham went Southwater’s way with a 113-98 win on shots. Top Horsham rink was John Austin, Ivor Harrison, Alan Fisher and skip Maggie Dellard 25-13. Best Southwater rink was Alan Baker, Brian Barnes, Beryl Simmons and skip Monica Hargrave 27-10.

Horsham had better luck against Swale (Sittingbourne) IBC, where the visitors only had enough players for the triples. Top rink to John Austin, Dennis Truscott, Dave Marden and Dorothy Armstrong.

Southwater Wasps took four of the available six points from their West Sussex County NE Div.2 League match against Reigate Park. Each team won one mat but the Wasps had the highest aggregate score to win the match and collect the two bonus points. Their winning rink of Ruth Corcoran, Noreen Mitchell, Rob Ayling and skip Beryl Simmons came back to win +8. Southwater were also victors when playing Horsham District IBC.
