HOWICK SLAMS UNSPORTSMANSHIP

PORTSLADE captain Jamie Howick was left fuming at opponents St Andrews on Saturday after a blatant act of unsportsmanship denied Portslade a possible chance of winning.

Needing six runs to win with eight balls left, Portslade's No 11 Gary Clark went out to bat with a runner, Rhys Grosvenor. Clark nudged a ball leg-side and set off to run. Both he and Grosvenor made their ground as did Simon Lisher at the other end.

St Andrews, however, noticed Clark was at the wrong end and Martin Blake ran the ball down to the wicket-keepers end to run Clark out.

There was a 10 minute delay while both umpires checked a rule book which stated that Clark was infact out. Howick said: "Our umpire Tony Jones said it was not within the spirit of the game but they didn't seem interested. The decision by the law book was correct so there's not a lot we can do about it."
