Huge turnout expected for half marathon

HASTINGS Half Marathon organisers are expecting around 3,500 people for the March 17 event.

More spaces have been made available after several people had to be turned away last year due to the swelling of numbers following the foot and mouth crisis.

Although a few spaces should be available on the day, there will be none left for the mini race. Around 160 entrants have been received out of a possible 200 for the children's event, so entrants are advised to book their place as soon as possible.

One runner who may be missing is last year's women's winner Esther Kiplagat.

The 35-year-old still has not made up her mind whether to enter after organisers refused to pay an appearance fee and a return air fare from Kenya.

Race director Eric Hardwick said: "We decided it would be wrong to spend charity money for that purpose.

"There is a generous amount of money provided by Hastings Borough Council for the prize fund and by Manor Insurance if someone beats 71 minutes.

"Athletes know that they have to perform to get their winnings at Hastings."

First prize is 1,000 and as well as a bonus of 5,000 for the first woman to race under 71 minutes.
