Hughes and Hannon get their Goodwood campaign up and running

Goodwood race-goers take note: Richard Hughes and Richard Hannon are back.

The jockey-trainer partnership who have hogged the winner’s enclosure at the racecourse for the past couple of years registered their first Goodwood successes of 2011 at track’s second meeting of the season.

Hughes, who was not at Goodwood for Saturday’s season opener, rode the winners of the first two races, both for Dick Hern Trophy holder Hannon, steering 11/4 favourite Jehanbux home in the 32Red Handicap Stakes then following up on 4/1 contender Crown Dependency in the EBF Goodwood Maiden Stakes.

Hughes completed a treble on board 15/2 shot Spice Fair in the last, the June 17th Evening Racing Stakes in the best race of the card, which could have gone to any one of four runners on the line.

The Royal Sussex Regiment Maiden Stakes brought a second Goodwood success of the week for trainer Luca Cumani and jockey Jean-Pierre Guillambert with 15/8 favourite Dubai Queen.

It was also a winning afternoon for three different Sussex trainers.

The Golf At Goodwood Fillies Stakes went to Arundel’s John Dunlop with a storming run from Beatrice Aurore, ridden by Ted Durcan, who went off as 4/1 second-favourite.

There was joy for Brighton’s Gary Moore in the Federation of Bloodstock Agents Stakes as George Baker guided 9/2 shot Mymumsaysimthebest to victory.

And the Three Friday Nights Maiden Stakes also went to a Sussex handler, Amanda Perrett, who would have been delighted to see Actionfront ridden first past the post by Eddie Ahern after going off at 16/1.

There was a smallish crowd in for the meeting on a pleasantly-warm and sunny afternoon. Next up at Goodwood it’s another midweek affair on Wednesday, May 18.
