With the scores level after four quarters the match was paused. The umpires announced that there would be no extra time played and that the next goal would win.

Hurst defended superbly to regain ball possession and quickly created an attack. With Brighton conceding a free shot, Millie Adams held the ball high and finished confidently to send the team into overjoyed celebrations.

Surrounded by her teammates, an emotional Millie said, “That moment was so terrifying. Everyone had faith in each other and it has to be the best performance of the season.”

Gabriella Mack, defending for Hurst, described the anxious moments before the winning shot. “I knew that if the shooter had got past me then we would lose the game. I worked as hard as I could and wouldn’t let her past.”

The match was exhilarating from start to finish. Hurst led by six after the first quarter but Brighton gathered themselves in the second and third quarters to set up the nail-biting finale.

Head of Hurst Netball, Rebecca Jutson, spoke just before the medals presentation and praised not only the U14 winners but also the Hurst U12 and U15 runner up teams for their efforts on another remarkable day of netball.

The victory sets a challenge for next year’s team to complete a hat-trick of consecutive U14 Sussex Cup wins for Hurst.
