Saxons comfortably saw off bottom-of-the-table Worthing II 7-2 at Horntye Park on Saturday to consolidate second place in Sussex Open Hockey League Division One.

The home side took a deserved first half lead through a Chris Meredith goal. It was a wonder how Saxons weren’t further ahead by the break, however, as the Worthing goalkeeper kept his side in the hunt with some good saves against an almost constant onslaught at times.

Saxons developed a bit more cutting edge and sharpness going forward during the second half, and the goals they had been threatening before the break started to flow.

Meredith scored his second goal and the previous weekend’s four-goal hero Alex Coombs also bagged a brace. Jamie Busbridge and Andrew Orr chipped in with one apiece for a Saxons side which became rampant towards the end.

Saxons conceded a couple of second half goals against the run of play despite some good defensive lines from Toby Reed, Paddy Cornish and man of the match Dan Burnett, who also provided some width and attacking options from the back.

Saxons seem to have a decent balance of youth and experience, and managed to nullify most of Worthing’s attacking options.

Saxons’ unbeaten start will no doubt undergo a stern test this coming Saturday when they travel to fifth-placed Penguin.
