In-form Scanlon cracks school record

Jake Scanlon from Lewes was in tremendous form in the Brighton, Hove and Portslade Schools Championships, setting a new competition record in the discus.

Having won the intermediate shot putt crown on day one with 12.73 metres, Scanlon, competing for Brighton College, strung together a fine series of throws with several exceeding the 42-year-old record of Mike Winch.

Former British international Winch, who now lives in Peacehaven, has frequently advised Scanlon when working with Commonwealth Games thrower Claire Smithson from Brighton at training sessions at the Lewes track.

Scanlon eventually finished with a magnificent throw of 49.50m, nearly four metres further than the record, and this performance earned him the trophy for the best boys's performance of the championships.

Scanlon carried his fine form in the Brighton, Hove and Portslade Schools event into the weekend's South of England Championships at Chelmsford and returned home with two medals and two personal bests.

In the under-17 discus Scanlon topped the 50-metre mark for the first time with a brilliant 50.09m to take the silver medal, and he repeated the feat in the hammer, again topping 50 metres for the first time with 50.51m which earned him the bronze medal.
