In praise of Supermaster- letter from Pauline Plant

In Jeannie's Racing Blog elsewhere on this website, Jeannie Knight wrote under Racing Record Breaker about the Arthur Stephenson-trained horse, Supermaster.

Jeannie wrote: "If I was asked to choose an equine hero, without a doubt it would be a bold jumping gelding called Supermaster, who was at his peak around 40 years ago around the northern circuits.

I loved to watch his fluid action, first over hurdles and then later in his career over fences with equal dash and assurance........"

Now Pauline Plant has sent this letter:

"I was delighted to discover that someone else remembered Supermaster. You invoked many wonderful memories of the horse which inspired my enduring love of horse racing.

"I saw Supermaster for the first time in a televised race at Wetherby when I was eight years old and he was a juvenile hurdler.

"He duly won the race but was disqualified and placed third after interference at the last.

"I followed him avidly through the years and remember most the way he would be held up at the back of the field and would flash home over the last three fences to win from a seemingly impossible position.

"He ran so often there were lots of opportunities to watch him and I still remember the thrill of seeing him in colour for the first time, sometime in the early 70s.

"I was pleased when Wetherby named a chase after him, but sadly this now seems to have been renamed.

"I had two particular, rather modest ambitions: to go to the Grand Canyon and watch the Supermaster Chase at Wetherby. I've been to the Grand Canyon...

Thank you for reviving some wonderful memories!"

Best wishes

Pauline Plant
