Injury blues for Crumplin

Sussex Senior Cup 2nd RoundRingmer 0Brighton & Hove Albion Reserves 1Ringmer boss John Crumplin is counting the cost after last season's beaten finalists were eliminated from their last major cup quest of the season on Wednesday evening. With a six-point lead at the top of the County League Crumplin now has his sights set on bringing the title to the Caburn, but his plans for tomorrow's league visit to Redhill were hit by two serious injuries.

Chris Dicker limped out in the first half with a dead leg and almost certainly misses the Redhill game while Matt Beeston is doubtful after picking up a leg injury in the second half.

To add to Crumplin's worries both Gareth Green and Danny Bird are unavailable while new man Jay Head is not yet eligible having earlier signed for Saltdean.

Crumplin said: 'I've got some problems for Saturday and Redhill's form has improved lately.'

It will be a testing few weeks for the Blues as six of their next seven games are away fixtures with the only Caburn date in December a visit from Worthing United on New Year's Eve.

After Redhill, Ringmer travel to Three Bridges, Crowborough, East Preston, Hailsham and Shoreham.

With manager Mark McGhee on the sidelines Brighton fielded a strong side on Wednesday including Jake Robinson, Albert Jarrett, Kerry Mayo and Michel Kuipers plus a number of younger squad players.

A battling Ringmer performance watched by a crowd of 188 saw them match Brighton in most areas apart from the last third of the pitch where they hardly created a chance.

Gavin Jones got little change from the Elphick brothers Tommy and Gary while Darren Tidy's pace did not really worry the nippy Brighton defenders.

Apart from the goal the Blues back four were solid marshalled by impressive captain Julian Curnow, and after the Dicker injury Clay Lamont slotted into central defence with Gary Stacey moving to left back.

'I was disappointed with the Brighton goal, we switched off for a few seconds, but then we were facing some very good players,' said Crumplin. 'We didn't create enough on the night.'

Jarrett, who trialled with Lewes at the start of last season, is all jinks and shimmies and when he did get on the same wavelength as his colleagues gave the Blues problems.

But there looked no danger in the 68th minute when Mayo slipped the ball to Robinson and he knocked it across goal. Goalkeeper Ross Standen and his defenders failed to challenge and it ran to Jarrett beyond the far post to fire low into the net.

The livewire Robinson, who played against Crystal Palace on Saturday, also gave the Blues plenty to think about but was wide when well placed in the ninth minute while he shot into the sidenetting after 20.

Most of the shooting was off target and apart from Andrew Ducille firing over late on Ringmer hardly ever threatened the Brighton goal.

Ringmer: Standen, Bird, Dicker (Lamont), Curnow, O'Callaghan, Stacey, Beeston (Barycza), Ducille, Jones, Green, Tidey.
