It's A Run Feast

A CENTURY stand for the seventh wicket between Glen Jones and Dave Browning almost completed the double for Steyning CC over their high-flying opponents in a match of 496 runs at The Memorial Field on Saturday.

Aussie Jones cracked 81 from just 82 balls before becoming the last man out, leaving Steyning seven runs shy of their victory target of 252.

Browning lent able support with 54, having joined Jones at 105-6 with the match seemingly slipping away from Dave Mates' side.

But the pair took the total to 206 before Browning was stumped by Mark Hillman from Sussex leg-spinner Conrad Mumby's bowling.

When Bridge had batted, a useful knock of 61 by Nick Creed had helped them post the massive score of 251-9 on a sweltering day for fielding.

Creed's innings stood out on the card, along with 40 from David Lindsay and 39 from Bridges skipper Danny Alderman.

Steyning had begun by removing James Chadburn and Krishna Singh to leave the title-challengers 12-2.

Lindsay then joined up with Jibra Khan but that partnership ended unnecessarily when Khan ran himself out suicidally.

Creed, Alderman and Steve Brown put the mid-innings flesh round the bones by adding 100 for just two wickets, to leave Bridges set up for a run-chase in the final overs at 209-6.

But Giles Haywood put a brake on the Bridges' scoring-rate. He took 4-31 in 7.4 overs including the prize wicket of Creed and his controlling tactics meant that Steyning made the batsmen wait until the second ball of the final over of the innings before collecting maximum batting points at 250.

That milestone would have been reached a lot sooner had Haywood not been introduced into the attack one that had looked clueless on a pitch where bowling variation had to be used.
