Izzy continues her winning form asHarriers turn out in force at Newick

Haywards Heath Harriers were out in force for their club championship race in Newick over the holiday weekend.

The 21st anniversary running of the Will Page 10k saw a huge turnout of 30 runners from the club.

Will Page was a Harrier lost, very sadly, in a car accident and this race is named in his memory.

The Sussex Grand Prix road race is run annually, mainly on scenic, undulating roads south of Newick village and starting and finishing on the playing field.

Izzy Coomber was again in awesome form, finishing first lady with a superb time of 41.12.

Amongst the top five men were the Harriers trio of Phil Hardaway, Rob Watts and Tom Mullen. Hardaway took third with 36.23, fourth was Watts in 36.33 and Mullen fifth with 36.49.

Ann Sinnett was among the top three veteran ladies in 43.49.

Tom Mullen commented: “We really dominated at Newick, with Izzy the first lady and three men in the top five finishers. It was a fantastic turnout from the club on what was a warm Sunday where there were some great performances.”

One of those came from Josh Pewter who finished 13th in 38.25, while Phil Payne was placed 16th in 38.36, Graham Hart was 17th in 39.33 and Steve Dallman 21st with 39.54.

Jason Russell in 40.16 pipped Richard Sutor with 40.17 for 25th place, with Barry Tullett 30th in 41.15 as Andrew Biggs clocked 41.48 for 36th place.

Other times by club members were Jon Kennedy 42.27, Ritchie Amer 42.31, Carl Bicknell 44.08, Dominic Roberjot 44.35, Mike Scholes 45.22, Stuart Austin 45.24, Colin Light 48.07, Richard Neale 48.20, Graham Lyall 49.36, Marion Hemsworth 51.43, Peter Cobbett 54.41, Michelle Pearce 55.19, Maureen Rea 58.33, Penny Rea 58. 55, Justine Denyer 1.02:43, 1.05:04 for Michelle Holdstock and Jenny Denyer 1.12:57

Over at the Tilgate run, Irene Parsley produced a new personal best of 30.52.

THE bank holiday weekend was a quiet one for Burgess Hill Runners but there were some great performances from the handful of runners who took part in the Newick Will Page 10k race.

Darryl Webb continued his recent good form, securing ninth place overall in a field of well over 200 runners. He clocked an excellent 37 minutes 47 seconds, less than two minutes behind winner Louis Taub of Brighton & Hove AC.

Not that far behind was Mark Nicholls who finished a superb 15th in 38.32.

BHR’s head coach Stuart Condie was 87th in 45.51, Dan Foord 109th in 47.56 and Neil Dawson 139th in 50.50.
