The Bexhill cueman thrashed Chinese potter Li Yan 10-2 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield and now needs two more wins to join the sport’s elite at The Crucible Theatre later this month.

Robertson took the match by the scruff of the neck early on, winning the first four frames of the opening session yesterday (Monday) afternoon. He conceded just 16 points in the first two frames before clinching the next two with breaks of 63 and 64.

Yan, who beat Robbie Williams 10-7 in the previous round, got himself on the scoreboard by winning frame five, but Robertson reeled off the next three with a top run of 68 in the seventh before Yan took frame nine to end the first session trailing 7-2.

World number 51 Robertson wasted little time in wrapping up the contest in the second session this afternoon. Yan, ranked 84th, scored only five points in three frames as Robertson knocked in breaks of 58 and 63 in the 10th, 54 in the 11th and 55 in the 12th.

Next up for Robertson is a meeting with another Chinese player in 34th-ranked Liang Wenbo. The first session will take place tomorrow afternoon with the second session following 24 hours later. The winner of that match will face St Leonards-based world number 16 Mark Davis for a place at The Crucible.
