Jimmy makes a little bit of snooker history

JIMMY Robertson made a little bit of snooker history by becoming the first player since 1947 to win the individual Eastbourne Open Championship four times in succession.

A couple of players have won the title at least five times, but the 18-year-old from Bexhill is the first to complete the grand slam.

In the best-of-seven-frame final at the Q-Ball, Robertson won 4-3 against ex-professional Matt Bray, who himself is a previous five times winner.

Robertson opened up with a magnificent 127 break to take the first frame only for Bray to respond by winning the next two. The teenager bounced back in the fourth with breaks of 44 and 64 before his opponent regained the lead.

Trailing by 38 points in frame six, Robertson then produced an excellent 65 clearance to level at 3-3 and followed this up with a break of 48 in the last frame to take the title.

In earlier rounds, Robertson overcame Nick Driver (Dolphin) 3-1 in the semi-finals with breaks of 77 and 79, Peter Buckland (Dolphin) 3-1 in the quarter-finals, Richard Anderson 2-0 (97) and Alan Carvil 2-0 (91, 66, 45).

The previous week, Robertson relinquished his East Sussex senior title to training partner Ashley Beal of Eastbourne.

After disposing of four opponents earlier in the day, including a 3-2 win over Brighton's John Gillard and a 3-1 success over Eastbourne's Peter Buckland with the help of a terrific break of 132, the reigning champion had to wait nearly three hours for the final to be played at around 9pm.

After surging into a 2-0 lead it looked as though it was all over but Beal slowly crawled his way back into the game to win four frames on the trot and triumph 4-2.
