Just the best in Britain!

WORTHING Golf Club are the new Home Nations Junior Team champions.

After winning the English title at Woburn, they have now proved they are the best in Britain.

Last week in La Manga, on the Spanish Costa Blanca, they finished on top of their four-way showdown with the champions of Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

They received the trophy from golf commentator Alex Hay.

Worthing won the medal matchplay tournament and kept the title in England. They finished the best of more than 1,200 teams, including around 800 from England.

They were the first champions in six years to include a girl. Selection is not compulsory: she just needs a low enough handicap to be chosen ahead of other boys. Girls play off women's tees, with courtesy shots.

Ireland, in 2004 (through Royal Dublin), are the only other nation to have won the crown in those six years. Worthing's was England's 10th triumph in the event's 12 years. Ireland also won in 1997.
