Kayley lifts England to fourth

KAYLEY ALCORN did England Schools proud in their international at the weekend. She proved the leading triple jumper from 17 nations and contributed 129 '” almost a fifth '” of England's 693 points that placed them fourth in the Gean Humbert Cup in Bordeaux.

Host nation France were fifth with 683 and England (693) were only three points off runners-up spot behind Italy (723). China were second (695) and Turkey third (694).

This International Schools Athletics Federation Under-18s match was divided into two contests: between schools and between individuals. Worthing Harriers athlete Alcorn, 17, of Angmering School, was selected in the individual girls section and her triple jump victory earned 68 points after she had lobbed 61 into the pot by winning her 100 metres hurdles race.

Her triple jump started with two no-jumps, probably because blustery wind disrupted run-ups. She put in 11.72m, then no-jumped her fourth and final attempt. But that single success was sufficient to win the field of 10 athletes.

The hurdles included 25 runners and was divided into five races, the fastest receiving the most points. Alcorn's 15.51sec was the 10th quickest.

Local athletes selected for the Sussex team at the English Schools Championships on July 13 and 14 at Birmingham '” Boys senior: Dan Dunscombe (high jump). Intermediate: Andy Millen (100m), Michael Di Laura (800m), Tom Marsden (middle distance).

Girls senior: Kayley Alcorn (triple jump), Kelly Denyer (400m), Laura Duke (shot). Intermediate: Brittany Saville (middle distance), Jessica Challen (javelin).
