Lancers' just desserts

GREG HEARNE'S double gave Steyning a deserved, if unexpected, victory at Lancing on Saturday. Town made life awkward, though, by failing to take any of their several chances when 2-0 up and had a nervy final few moments after Lancing substitute Gavin Jones clawed a late goal back.

Hearne was a constant threat for Steyning and gave his side the lead after nine minutes. Sean Hourigan won possession off Lancers' Will Berry on the left touchline and fed Ben Garman whose superb through ball was lobbed, first-time, over Lancing keeper Ashley Walker by Hearne. It was a finish more at home in the Premier League than County League.

Hearne then fired wide from 15 yards before Walker produced a stunning tip-over save to prevent Jim Miller from scoring against his former club.

With Town on top, a lapse of concentration in defence nearly let Lancing equalise. Darren Annis raced onto a long ball forward but crashed a 20-yard effort against the top of Dave Angell's bar.
