Last gasp equaliser sums up season

"IT sums up our season a little bit" was the verdict of Sidley United joint manager Peter Heritage after his side conceded a last gasp equaliser in the 2-2 draw at Horsham YMCA.

The Blues appeared to have victory in the bag after taking the lead three minutes from time but Phil Churchill scrambled the ball home after it had bounced down off the crossbar and there wasn't even time for the re-start.

But that shouldn't detract from a generally decent United performance and, as Heritage pointed out, four points from successive away games constitutes a healthy return.

Heritage said: "At 2-1 up we should have closed it out but maybe we lost a little bit of concentration. Before the game we would have settled for a draw but we should have done it - that would have brought us a step closer to them."

The Gullivers outfit picked up from where they left off in the 2-0 win over Hailsham Town four days earlier, playing at a high tempo and, with Lee Wood to the fore, looking steady at the back as the two teams, both of whom are better than their bottom-half stations in the view of Heritage, felt each other out during a scoreless first 45 minutes.

But Horsham, a neat and tidy footballing side who had won five out of six prior to losing at Rye & Iden United on their previous outing, were the first to strike three minutes into the second half. They attacked through the Sidley left-back region and Matt Duffield converted after an initial effort struck the crossbar.

It wasn't long before parity was restored though and Wes Tate will be given the benefit of the doubt as to whether his effort from the flank was a sublime shot or a mis-directed cross.

The Blues could in fact have gone ahead before they did but Kevin Rose couldn't capitalise on being released by Tate and one or two other openings went begging as well.

The goal was a touch fortunate when it came but Heritage felt Karl Tarrant "would have scored anyway" if the defender whom he peeled off of hadn't diverted Craig Ottley's through-ball over the head of his own goalkeeper.

Sidley entertain Three Bridges on Saturday April 10 (3pm) before welcoming Ringmer to Gullivers on Easter Monday (11am).
