Last minute goal denies Saxons

South Saxons’ 100 per cent home record was ended by a last minute goal on Saturday.

It meant that Saxons had to settle for a 2-2 against Lewes III and their lead at the top of South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One was cut to two points.

Saxons captain Paddy Cornish said: “It’s not two points dropped at all, it was a good point in the end. They definitely fielded a stronger side than what they probably have done in most of their league games this year.”

The hosts got off to their customary slow start and were lucky to be only 1-0 down in the first 20 minutes, but after that they went on to play some of their best hockey of the season.

Dave Draper drew them level at half time and Toby Reed put Saxons ahead in the second period. Draper missed a penalty flick to make it 3-1 and Lewes pinched a point at the end. Man of the match was Alex Coombs, pictured.

A full report will appear in Friday’s Hastings Observer.
