Late decision pays off with medal

A late decision to contest a leading badminton tournament proved the right one for Adam Lam.

The 13-year-old received a last minute call-up from one of his ex-doubles partners to take part in Badminton England’s Under-17 Silver Tournament in Cheltenham on Sunday.

Adam opted to team up with Buckinghamshire-based Alex Mitchell in the boys’ doubles and was no doubt glad that he did because the pair came away with a bronze medal despite being up older, taller and stronger opponents.

Having won all their matches in their box, they advanced to the semi-finals where they were edged out in three sets by Ross Green and Alex Horner 15-9, 12-15, 15-13.

Adam’s elder sister Amber played in the Under-17 Gold Tournament at the same venue on Saturday. After winning all of her box matches, she narrowly lost her quarter-final in three sets and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.

Adam and Amber are ranked 3rd and 10th in England for their respective age groups, and Adam is on the Badminton England World Class Start Programme, Both train under coach Manfred Tripp at ‘The Academy’ in Milton Keynes.
