This time it was Chichester III playing the victims, a 34-3 defeat giving the Sussex 1 leaders a perfect 12 wins from 12.

“It was a good game, more competitive then the final score suggests and more competitive then some games we’ve played,” Boro skipper Richard Nicholls said. “We had to work hard and 34-3 didn’t really reflect the game.”

Si Burfiend, playing at ten got the scoring started with the game’s first try. Further tries came from Frazer Oliphant-Hope, Will Akers, Hamish Goodman-Dorrington and Will Boulton off the bench.

The try of the game saw winger Will Scrase came in off the blindside and take the ball from a lineout, dart beyond a number of despairing tackles before offloading to Harry Perry to score under the posts.

Nicholls praised the performance of Stuart Standing in the second row, saying: “He’s stepped up well from playing Seconds rugby last year, he was everywhere on Saturday.”

Nicholls is expecting a tough test away at second placed Crawley in the Sussex Shield this Saturday, a side they then go to again straight after the Christmas break.

Pulborough’s Second team, the Pirates enjoyed a 34-12 win away at Chichester IV.

The Pirates dominated the set pieces in the first half but failed to convert it into points, crossing the try line only twice through centre Cameron Lyall and winger Ollie Bamber, while Chi scored to trail 12-7 at half-time.

Pulborough stepped up their game after the break. Hooker and captain Alan Nye rewarded his fellow forwards for their domination with a try just after the kick off. Three more scores came from scrum-half Jonathan Scrase, winger Jack Lawrence and number 8 Fenn Caddick diving between the posts before Chi scored a consolation try in the final minute.
