Lee gets Games place after all

Lee Emanuel will be heading to the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next month after all.

It looked as though the athletics ace had missed out on the chance to go to India after being left out of the three-man England squad for his favoured event '“ the 1,500m.

But he has now been called-up for the 5,000m following the withdrawal of double European Championships gold medallist Mo Farah due to fatigue.

Emanuel, from St Leonards, admitted he had given up on the chance of going to the Games and had planned to return to the United States to step up his training.

He said: "It's going to be a good experience to learn what these big championships are about. I'll go out there relaxed, take as much of it in as I can and just enjoy it."

Emanuel achieved the 'A' standard for the Commonwealth Games with a time of 13.31 in the United States at the end of April '“ his only competitive race over 5K.

He headed out to his new training base in Michigan on Wednesday for two-and-a-half weeks before moving on to the holding camp in Doha for a week and then New Delhi.
