Lee on course

MARTIN LEE, looking back at the Henman game, said at Wimbledon: I would just love to get my ranking up high enough so I can play on Centre Court a lot more.

"I felt pretty calm out there though I was nervous at first and did not relax until I won my first game.

I slept OK before the match but probably only because I didn t the night before that! You see Centre Court on TV and you watch from the stands and think about playing on it. But you dream about playing there as soon as you start tennis.

I d have liked to have met Greg and Tim already, and then I d have known more about what they re like to play against.

Lee showed that he had the ability to rally. Henman knew this and was keen to keep the points short. Lee as good as matched Henman in service velocity but Henman had the better return and volleys.

I was a bit too slow onto his short balls and then he passed me. Tim volleyed well and every time I thought I had a chance, he came up with a big serve or volley.

But he s a top-five volleyer in the world on grass. Whenever I dropped the ball short, Tim was straight on top of the net, putting a lot of pressure on me, and making it tough to pass him.

I did that to Pozzi and that s what I ve got to do to all the players. When I put pressure in Tim s serve I got the break.

I know I can definitely be a top 100 player. I ve made a big improvement this year and I m confident it s going to come sooner rather than later.

I m into the hard court season now. Cement s my best surface and I m very confident. I d like to meet Greg and Tim on that surface. It s not so much about results as about my own game. But if you re into a new level of play, it takes time for you to come through.

NEXT WEEK: learning to play tennis locally, at a club or in a park.
