Lewes' tough test at the National

LEWES face their stiffest task so far in the Davies & Tate inter-club knockout competition when they go to East Sussex National tomorrow.

Lewes have had comfortable wins against Hassocks, The Nevill and Singing Hills so far, but East Sussex will be a tough proposition on their own patch.

The National came through a tricky assignment at West Hove 7-5 in the previous round, when Ben Newsome, Chris Cannon, Jack Budgen, Ray Day and Malcolm Clear all won their afternoon singles.

Crowborough Beacon start favourites at home to Cowdray Park although the visitors will be no pushovers. They defeated a youthful Mannings Heath team 81/2-31/2 in the last round and rely heavily on the experience of 60-year-old Rod Brown and club champion Sean Gallagher.

Three weeks ago Crowborough won 101/2-11/2 against Holtye when Graham Smith holed in one at the 192-yard sixth.

Two of the leading sides clash with Littlehampton at home to Worthing. The visitors are the trophy favourites this season and will be out to avenge a defeat at the semi-final stage two years ago.

Littlehampton were 3-1 down after the morning foursomes against Haywards Heath in the last round but came through strongly after lunch to win six and draw the other two in the singles for an 8-4 victory.

Copthorne face their third consecutive away tie after victories at Eastbourne Downs and Cottesmore, where they won 91/2-21/2.

Fourth-round draw: East Sussex National v Lewes; Littlehampton v Worthing; Crowborough Beacon v Cowdray Park; Sweetwoods Park v Copthorne.
