Lewry at Lord's is no fantasy!

IT WILL BE Sussex v Lancashire in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy Final on August 26. But it is still only just sinking in with him '” and us '” that the little boy brought up in Princess Avenue, Tarring, is going to be playing in a Lord's Final at the age of 35.

He's played there for Sussex against Middlesex, yet has never otherwise been there, even to watch a match.

Last week, he related how Sussex reached Lord's in 1993, the year he signed for them straight from Goring in the Sussex Invitation League. No Sussex Invitation League player had ever been offered a county contract. He was in the 2nd XI who lost their Bain Clarkson Final to Leicester at Grace Road the following day.

But he admitted: "The first team asked me to come with them to Lord's. But I didn't feel I deser-ved to be there. I didn't know the players and I felt a complete imposter. So I didn't even go. I went to play for Goring in a friendly at Havant, instead."
