LEWRY THE LOCAL HERO

MARK 2003 as the year Worthing sport provided Sussex cricket with one of its immortals. Jason Lewry, out of Goring Cricket Club and Princess Avenue, was the only Sussex born-and-bred player in the side who last week clinched the first full County Championship title ever won by a Sussex team.

And his best-ever eight wickets for 106 wrapped the final victory, over Leicestershire at Hove on Friday, after a season in which left-arm swing and paceman Lewry smashed his career-best innings with 70 against Essex at Colchester and took 10 Essex wickets in the match at Arundel.

Lewry (32, born in Worthing), new England cap James Kirtley (Eastbourne, injured) and Carl Hopkinson (Brighton, not selected) are all Sussex born and bred in the sqaud of 18; Matthew Prior was raised in Sussex but born in South Africa.
