Littlehampton draw at Stirlands

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club finished eight runs short of victory in their top-of-the-table clash at Stirlands on Saturday.

They remain in second place but third-placed Stirlands have moved to within a point of them. Haywards Heath, who took 30 points in their win over Roffey, are now just nine points behind Littlehampton.

Leaders Chichester took 30 points from their victory over Worthing to move 37 points clear at the top.

Stirlands, after winning the toss, made 185-7 from their 53 overs. Sean Heather struck 65 and Richard Thelwell hit 49. For Littlehampton, Matt Keen and captain Benn Challen both took two wickets.

Littlehampton finished their reply on 178-9. Chris Kirkham scored 66 with five fours and one six and Gary Tester struck 37 in an opening stand of 70.

For Stirlands, Tom Clark took 4-68 and Danny Cox 3-46.

In Invitation League Division 2, Arundel lost at home to Pagham by three wickets after falling from 120-0 to finish their 49 overs on 166-9.

Richard James hit 13 fours in his 72 and Bradley James scored seven fours in his 48 as they put on the opening partnership.

But, Pagham got home with four balls to spare despite Neil Chitty taking three more wickets.

In Division 3, Gareth Challen shone with bat and ball for Clymping at home to fellow promotion hopefuls Southwick.

After Wickers asked Clymping to bat first, Challen smashed 124 as his side made 250-5 from their 49 overs.

Southwick were then dismissed for just 77 as Challen took 4-28.

In the same division, East Preston went down to a nine-wicket defeat at home to Portslade.

EP were bowled out for 172 with Jack Sunderland scoring 44 and Simon Locke 41.

Portslade then reached their target in just 24 overs as captain Sam Jones crashed 89 not out and Paul Glover struck 70.
