Littlehampton move top with crushing win over Chichester

LITTLEHAMPTON Rugby Club moved to the top of Sussex League Division 2 West after a crushing 44-5 victory over previously unbeaten Chichester on Saturday.

Littlehampton got on the scoreboard first when they drove forward in the scrum and Craig Boddington crossed the line.

After battling back and forth, Littlehampton claimed the ball on the halfway line and Matt Eames produced an excellent solo effort to go over and Dean Torode kicked the conversion.

Both teams started to fight hard for the ball and the play moved from end to end, but Littlehampton had the better of the possession and Torode broke clear to run in their third try.

Boddington then put down his second of the match after driving forwards from a lineout.

Before the half-time whistle, Littlehampton had to defend a quickly-taken penalty, but did so and re-claimed the ball, broke forward, and Gavin Wood went over to make the score 27-0 at the break.

Littlehampton got off to a great start in the second period with Paul Merridue making an interception at the kick-off, which gave Littlehampton the advantage and man of the match Eames went over in the corner.

The game continued to move from end to end as Chichester won a few penalties and made Littlehampton work for the ball.

Littlehampton’s defence stood firm and they added another two tries through Ian Ritchie, then Gary Keirle, Torode kicking one conversion.

A final Littlehampton push saw them lose the ball deep in the Chichester half and that allowed Chichester to break and touch down a consolation try.
