LIVEWIRE SCHNEIDER TOO MUCH FOR REDHILL

UNITED moved up to third place in their first season back in Division 1 under their new name with a comfortable victory at a windswept Robert Albon Memorial Ground on Saturday.

After a scare at either end, United, inspired by Stuart Sell, grew in confidence and the lively Dave Schneider had three golden chances. After two hair-raising misses it was to be third time lucky as he powered in an 18-yard header from a pinpoint Steve Webb cross to send the hosts into the break with the advantage.

They continued to press their opponents in the second half with Schneider's 65th minute one-on-one chance thwarted by Redhill keeper Chris Roberts. The ball rebounded to skilful midfielder Paul Brown who thrashed it over.

Never endangered, United and made it safe when Webb firmly headed home Sell's expertly swung-in free kick with 10 minutes left.

Afterwards a delighted manager Ian Browne said: "It was a really pleasing performance from back to front. Everyone worked hard and did the job they were asked. We limited Redhill to very few chances and we hope to build on this in the weeks to come."

However, on a downbeat note he added: "We were disappointed to part company with our Reserves team manager John Rapps this week. There was a difference of footballing opinion and, unfortunately, it was agreed that the only solution was to go our separate ways."

LANCING boss Mark Cox has signed forward Dan Barrett from Newhaven and midfielder Dave Stevens from Burgess Hill. He has asked Worthing United for permission to speak to playmaker Glenn Souter and is also, he says, lining up a striker with a proven record.

Barrett played on Saturday and Wesley Lopez was moved from the wing to inside-left midfield. Barrett was foiled in a one-on-one by keeper Eric Barratt, who at 1-0 made two crucial saves from Lopez, and Barrett also hit the underside of the Pottage bar.

Otherwise, Lancers did not look like scoring.

Cox commented: "We had no cutting edge and that brought pressure onto our defence, where keeper James Everett has been fantastic for us this season."

LANCING: Everett; White, Thompson, Court, Miller; Dixon, Rhodie, Lopez, Cina; Mtambara, Barrett. Subs: Willis (White 60), Cattell (Miller 75), Miller (Barrett 80), McDonald, Aylward gk.

Pottage scorers: Scott Collimore (2min), Jack McNab (15), Nick Humphrey (19). Att: 35.
