Local runners seal top finishes and personal bests in Brighton Marathon

A LARGE number of local club runners pulled on their trainers to tackle the Brighton Marathon on Sunday.

Another record-breaking year saw 8,506 finish the fifth annual 26.2-mile race, around the streets of Brighton.

Kenyan Will Cheboy smashed the course record, after pulling away from last year’s winner, Dominic Kangor, to finish in 2hr 09min 25sec.

That was more than a minute quicker than his fellow countryman’s previous winning record in 2013, and still 11 seconds faster than him on Sunday as Kangor came home second in 2-09-36. Wilfred Murgor completed a Kenyan one-two-three in 2-12-17.

Alice Milgo was the first lady home in 2-35-33, but the local highlight saw Worthing Harrier Sarah Kingston finish as the first Sussex lady. She finished eighth overall in 3-00-20.

John McGrath was the first Harrier home, with an impressive 2-57-25.

Tuff Fitty Triathlton Club had a strong turnout and, with weather conditions better than predicted, some good times were recorded.

The first club member home, in just 2-46-53, was Dan Cobby, who crossed the line in 22nd position overall.

The first two Worthing Striders home were Lucy Robinson and Ian Puttock in 3-42-19 and 3-49-56 respectively, both of which were personal bests.

Michael Jones led the Goring Road Runners home in 3-25-20, ahead of Vince Shirley in 3-53-55, Jamie Dawson in 4-34-11 and Bryan Darney in 4-40-07.

Seasoned Goring member Dawson was running the marathon to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis, after losing his wife, Sandra, to the condition last year.

Dawson, who is partially blind and deaf owing to a rare genetic disorder Usher Syndrome, is also taking on the London Marathon this weekend for the charity.
