Luffa girls swim at Olympic venue

Following a fantastic qualifying round of the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) national relays in September, the Bishop Lufa Year 11 and sixth-form girls’ freestyle team found they had qualified as 32nd fastest team in the country for the national finals.

The team travelled to the National Aquatics Centre in the London Olympic park to face the top 30 schools in the country.

The girls – Polly Lorimer, Anna Turner, Abbie Turner and Sasha Arnell-Smith were finalists in the 4x50m freestyle relay.

Lorimer got the team off to a fantastic start with the girls in second position at the first change, followed by Abbie, Anna and finally Arnell-Smith, who stood in at the very last minute.

The girls swam really well and finished in 29th - an improvement on their entry position. This was a very good result against extremely strong independent schools, many of whom offer scholarships for their swimming programmes.

It is the first time Bishop Luffa have had a team in the final of this competition and was a day to remember for them.
