Mac: Blame me for defeat

County League OneHailsham 1 Wick 3Stringers's manager Kenny McCreadie blamed himself for Saturday's first home league defeat of the season.

McCreadie said: 'I sat on the bench and said nothing because I keep getting in trouble with officials.

'I was a good boy and never criticised anything, never motivated my players.

'It was the worst game I have had in my life, I'm a passionate guy and shouting at my players keeps them on their toes.

'It was the flattest game I've ever seen, the place was like a morgue and Wick deserved to win, I take full responsibility. I'll be back to normal for Saturday's game at home to Worthing United.

'But we're doing okay and are still there despite not having a big budget.

'I've got lots of injuries and have just heard Nick Whiteman is going to Sidley, but at least the reserve and youth team players are getting a chance.'

Lowly Wick gave Hailsham the runaround at times but Stuart Lewis was unlucky to see his effort headed off the line.

Wick went ahead on 27 minutes when a Lee Howard free-kick beat goalkeeper Russell Tanner, but Hailsham were level two minutes later thanks to Simon Stevens's cracking shot.

Wick went ahead just before the break when Adam Burton was too quick for the Stringers's defence and headed home.

The visitors got a third on 63 minutes when Danny Gurd raced though and fired in as the Hailsham defence appealed vainly for offside.

Town were then most unfortunate when Rory Newby fired in a 35-yarder but referee David Spain disallowed it for offside.

Hailsham: Tanner, Hunt (Done), Early, S Lewis, Spencer, P Richardson, Skan (Newby), S Stevens, Cooper, M Richardson, Scamardella (Whiteman).

Division Two Cup 1st Round

Saltdean 2 Wealden 3

SALTDEAN boss Mark Smeaton takes some positives from this cup elimination even though his side lost a two-goal lead.

Smeaton said: 'I was disappointed with the defeat but they are top of the league and running away with it so there is hope.

'Over the first team and reserves I've got 12 injured while Craig Bunch and Dave and Pepe Martin were all suspended, and we were also fielding a very young side.

'To cap it all the player I brought in to add experience, Damien Dobbyn, has a long-term injury.

'I've made a seven-day approach for Leo Day at Three Bridges. He is going back to Burgess Hill eventually but said I can use him in the meantime.

'We were all over them in the first half and should have been 3-0 up at the break as Mark Saxby put a great chance over from six yards though in fairness to him it did bobble.

'And we had a goal disallowed in the second half when Saxby headed in. That was ridiculous as the player given offside was standing over by the linesman.

'Their first goal was definitely offside and that started their revival.'

Pole Michael Pietzak opened the scoring for Saltdean on 19 minutes when he met a cross from youth team player Harry Coaker and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Smeaton said: 'Michael works on a Saturday and doesn't finish until 2pm so I can't use him for away games which is a shame.'

Teenager Lee Smith got the second on 27 minutes when he slipped in Pietzak's cross.

The Wealden goals came in a 12-minute spell midway through the second half from Tobi Hutchinson, Reece Head and Steve Davies.

Smeaton will have Carl Southwell back for tomorrow's league trip to Crawley Down.

Sussex Intermediate Cup 1st Round

Peacehaven 4 Broadbridge Heath Res 1

PEACEHAVEN boss Darren Guirey was delighted that Jason Stepney has returned to goalscoring form.

Guirey said: 'Jason hadn't scored for a while so I was happy for him.

'In fact I would have given him a hat-trick but they were all saying that his third one was knocked in by a defender.

'We were poor in the first half but went in 2-1 up and played well in the second.'

Stepney opened the scoring on 25 minutes when he beat two defenders and rounded the goalkeeper.

Heath equalised on 43 minutes but Peacehaven were back in front a minute later when Mark Price's shot flew in.

Stepney was at it again on the hour when he took on the goalkeeper and beat him after a good move for 3-1.

He said: 'They put us under pressure early on but didn't get any shots on goal and we defended well.'

Tighe was sidelined by a thigh injury while Chris Georgiou was left out as a precaution as he had a slight leg problem.

Newhaven's goals came in the space of three minutes near the end of the first half.

Simon Halsey got the first on 40 minutes when Ross Newman threaded the ball through to him and as Halsey turned back a defender handled. Halsey sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Three minutes later Sean Breach put in a strong tackle and found Halsey square on the edge of the box. He squared for Kevin Aylward, who had a good game in midfield, to fire into the top corner from 20 yards.

Town took the lead on the half-hour when Adam Kneller slid a finely-weighted ball to Jobe who beat the advancing goalkeeper with ease.

Six minutes later Jobe pounced again as he collected Chris Stanyard's pass cutting in from the right and shot into the bottom corner.

Chris Stanyard went close before Town took a 3-0 lead with Wingate powering home a header from Kneller's corner.

Into the second half Tom Callaghan missed a great opportunity when through as his shot bounced back off a post, while at the other end Ben Burns missed a sitter when he put the ball over the crossbar from eight yards.

Crowborough 4 Selsey 0

THE Crows cruised through against Division Two high-fliers Selsey and now face a derby clash with Wealden in the next round.

After just 11 minutes Crows had to make a change when Liam Bull was forced out of the action after a heavy challenge from Price.

Ross Treleaven came on for his home debut and the 18-year-old made an immediate impact. On 15 minutes Dean Chamberlain weaved his magic down the right and cut the ball back to Treleaven who, from 18 yards, fired hard and low into the far corner, giving Rob Hill no chance.

Chamberlain then saw his curling free-kick come back off the crossbar, but on 28 minutes Treleaven was put through. He showed great composure and waited for Hill to go to ground before cleverly clipping the ball into the net.

Selsey hit back and on 35 minutes thought they had scored but Ridley's effort was ruled out for offside, while moments before the break Treleaven almost got a third but his shot just went past the far upright.

Into the second half Crows looked menacing every time they went forward and on 61 minutes Treleaven did it again, finishing superbly for his hat-trick.

And in the 76th minute Wayne Clark robbed Brown and coolly slid it past Hill to make it 4-0.

Crowborough: Movaffagh, Meek, Prodger, Rhodes, C Bishop, Godden (Munday), Clarke, Chamberlain, Adams (Body), Baker, Bull (Treleaven). Subs: Colbran.

After the game Treleaven was presented with the ball by match sponsor Dimplex signed by the players to mark his memorable debut.

On Sunday Crows veterans played USM Montargis Veterans and in an entertaining game ran out 5-3 winners with goals from Paul Smith, Harry Smith, Mick Dorrill and two Shaun Muggeridge efforts.
