Mac: Leach would have had hat-trick

County League OneRye United 0 Hailsham 0HAILSHAM dropped two points against Rye at The Salts on Tuesday evening and manager Ken McCreadie declared himself 'very disappointed.'

He went on: 'Danny Leach was ill and if he had played he would have got a hat-trick.

'Nobody else wanted to stand up and be counted. We should have been four or five ahead at half-time.

'Peter Cooper missed a penalty and hit the crossbar and we had two cleared off the goalline.

'At least we got our 23rd clean sheet of the season, the defence did well, and we have games in hand of the leading teams.'

Hailsham bossed the first half and should have broken the deadlock on 40 minutes when Ashley Jarvis was tripped by Richard Vidler in an incident that Rye claimed was outside the penalty area.

Referee Gary Croft thought otherwise and awarded a spotkick but Cooper's shot was saved by goalkeeper Jon Gardner.

It was not Cooper's night as apart from striking the crossbar he also saw two shots saved by Gardner's body.

Gardner failed to resume after half-time because of a dead leg, but James Colman proved an able deputy.

The Stringers produced less in the second half although Cooper and Stevens saw efforts flash wide and a Mark French effort sailed over the crossbar.

Late on Hailsham almost conceded when Mark Gall was somehow denied in a scramble and Russell Tanner made a smart save from Tom Cusden. Tomorrow Hailsham are at home to Wick.

Hailsham: Tanner, Monk (Early), Barden, Smith, Hunt, Jarvis, Stevens, Lewis (M French), Cooper (Barnard), S French, Richardson.
