Macca is Blues' shoot-out hero

GOALKEEPER Andy McCarthy was Rustington Football Club's hero in their Division 3 Cup success on Good Friday after a tense, nail-biting shoot-out of 32 penalties.

After nothing could separate the two teams, it came down to the lottery of spot-kicks. McCarthy twice saved penalties, where had Lingfield scored they would have won. In total, McCarthy saved three and was bundled by his team-mates after Lingfield's Peter Truman fired the 32nd penalty wide.

Blues' Terry Withers converted the opening spot-kick but then the next four were missed. Lingfield's Jason Spiteri levelled before Ryan Morten hit the bar and John Penalver put Lingfield ahead.

Adam Bibb had to score to keep Rustington in the game, which he did, then McCarthy brilliantly denied Bradley Ling, diving high to his right.

The next 14 players, including both keepers, were successful before Richie Hellen had his effort saved. His second miss. Ling then had his effort saved by McCarthy which was also his second miss, to keep proceedings going.

The next five were all converted before Truman missed and the large, vocal, Rustington support could begin their celebrations.
