Mark 11th in tough Mitre Hilly

Easter brings a full programme of challenging time trials. Good Friday's was over 41 miles of rolling terrain, taking riders from Crawley to Shoreham and back.

The Lewes Wanderers Cycling Club had five entries on the start sheet, but of these only Spencer Coleman in one hour 53 minutes and 59 seconds and Mike Levitt (1:56.15) completed the event, which was won by Jason White in 1:37.21.

On Saturday three Wanderers rode the Brighton Mitre Hilly 10 miles. After failing to start the previous day, Mark Winton posted an impressive 23.41 and finished 11th overall.

Jeremy Meades said: 'The Brighton Mitre Hilly was very wet and miserable and Foxhill is, for a fat bloke like me, too long at 1.2 miles '“ I virtually ran out of gears. But the descent? Thank you very much!

'I was not too happy with 28:39, but it was only my second race of the season and not really my terrain.'

Alan Lloyd completed the course in 30.14 in an event won by Mike Coyle in 22.24.

On Easter Monday came the second leg in the Brighton Mitre, this time over 25 miles.

The climb from the HQ to the start at the top of the Devil's Dyke is a challenge in itself. Then it's a 50 mph descent before the next five miles are down narrow, twisting country lanes involving hard braking and throwing the bike over to the left and then the right. After some more traditional rolling miles the final two-and-a-half-mile climb to the finish is hard for riders.

Mark Winton completed the challenge in an impressive 1:04.17 and in finishing eighth scored some useful points in the Wanderers Classic League competition.

Spencer Coleman (1:13.10) and Jeremy Meades (1:16.02) both completed their Easter doubles but, as on Saturday, Mike Coyle was the fastest rider in 59.44.
