Marler: '˜this is exactly where I want to be'

Marler, who has played for the Twickenham based club since 2009, took to Twitter to make the announcement.

He wrote, “I’m a Quin. I love everything about the club, good and bad.”

The club have chosen not to release details about the length of the contract.

The 25-year-old prop, born in Eastbourne, attended the nearby Heathfield Community College as a youngster.

He then started his career as a loosehead prop with Heathfield & Waldron RFC, before moving to Eastbourne RFC and eventually signing for the Premier League giants.

Early on in his career, Harlequins also sent him out on loan to fellow Sussex team Worthing.

He has since won 37 caps for England, making his debut in 2012 against South Africa.

Marler also played during the 2013 Six Nations as well as the 2015 Rugby World Cup, winning over fans nationwide.

He said, “After a tough 2014-15 season, both personally and as a team, I took some time to think about my future.

“It quickly dawned on me that this is exactly where I want to be. Being part of a team is not just about winning.”

Both staff and fans of Harlequins have expressed their delight at Marler’s decision to renew his contract after the team had slumped to a disappointing 8th position in the league last season.

Conor O’Shea, Director of Rugby at the club, said, “I am staggered that Joe is still only 25. He already has a wealth of experience, and when he develops into the player he can be, I have no doubt he will become one of the great loosehead props in world rugby.”

O’Shea himself played as a fullback for London Irish, winning 35 caps for his country.

He added, “This is a massive re-signing for us, and I am sure everyone associated with Harlequins will be delighted.”

Marler has contributed significantly to Harlequins’ resurgence this season, appearing in three games thus far, scoring one try.

Harlequins are currently sitting third in the table, much to the delight of all those involved with the club.
