McBride bid fails at final hurdle

ALLEN McBride's bid to claim the singles title at the 84th Hastings Men's Open Bowls Tournament faltered at the final hurdle when was beaten by Wayne Cheeseman at White Rock Gardens on Saturday.

The 29-year-old from Borough Green was just too good for the Polegrove player who did well to stay in the match after dropping ten shots on the opening five ends.

Cheeseman, who walks with a limp - the legacy of a car crash when he was 16, eventually won 21-12 to become the final winner of the town's men's singles in its present format. As from next year the tournament will merge with the ladies' equivalent to form the Hastings Open Bowls Tournament.

The new champion paid tribute to his opponent. "I was playing a good player and always knew he would come back at me," he said.
