MCC washout forgotten as Duke's troops lift Chichester's cricket week

CHICHESTER Priory Park's annual cricket week was a big hit '“ even if one prestige game was a washout.

The MCC’s visit to Priory Park last Thursday was a non-starter because of rain but the rest of the week’s matches survived, and they produced some outstanding cricket.

The club’s under-14s began the week with back-to-back wins over Barns Green and Ansty, Beck Hemingway starring with the bat in each game and Will Price with the ball.

Chichester’s senior cricketers took over on Wednesday with a game against Hampshire Maniacs which the visitors won.

After the rain-ruined Thursday, a Duke of Richmond’s XI arrived for the final game of the week and just failed to defeat Priory in a high-scoring draw – totalling 273 for four before the Chichester reply came up just short. Matt Gregory struck a ton for Chichester.

A marquee put up on the ground for the final day was brimming with guests and proved a valuable fund-raiser for the club’s junior section.

Cricket club chairman Graeme Bennison said: “Our cricket week is a well-established annual event and this year was special – it was part of our 160th anniversary celebrations.”
