Men win Arun’s festive bowling battle of the sexes

Arun ladies faced Arun men in the Osborne Trophy, a competition played over three legs. There was plenty of noise and laughter on the rinks for this festive first leg, with the ladies playing in their Christmas regalia.

The men won 135-97.

Scores: J Boucher, M Phillips, J Whitfield and D Latter lost 19-15; E Fitch, E Cooke, S Judd and M Richards lost 21-16; I Brooker, P Rampton, J Taffurelli and B Spicer lost 27-17; D Anderson, V Greenaway, B Collins and A Janman lost 25-16; C Hobbs, I Morris, S Hart and S Miles lost 20-13; S Pugh, S Stocker, G Conley and C Horsley lost 23-20.

Arun ladies travelled to Wealdon for a friendly. At the end of a very close game, Wealden emerged 111-107 winners.

WEST SUSSEX B entertained London in a friendly, looking to improve on their poor form in their last match away at Kent.

They started well, taking six points in each of the morning sessions to lead 12-4 at lunch. London rallied in the afternoon and West Sussex could only manage one win in the third session.

The points were shared in the final session but West Sussex took the bonus points in the singles, triples and fours for a satisfying 24-16 win.

In the singles, Crablands’ Mollie Back won 14-12 and lost 17-6. In the pairs, Bognor’s Pam Andrews won 11-9 and lost 15-10 while Bognor pair Betty Williams and Marlene Steel lost 19-10 and 13-12.

In the triples, Infinity’s Denise Kirby lost 11-7 and 11-6. In the fours, Crablands’ Elaine Sadler and Rod Shambrook won 8-6 and 10-7 while Lavant’s Jackie Lee and Bognor’s Clive Andrews won 16-4 and lost 14-5.

CRABLANDS

Crablands Bitterns visited Lavant Green and won on both mats, gaining all six points.

Scores: Sylvia Gray, Terry Axworthy, Nigel Reynolds and Peter Blackman won 24-17; Ted Murrell, Iris Brown, Geoff Brown and Lil Tuck won 29-12; (friendly): Gwen Coombes, Eve Clifton, Jan Obermayer and Jim Saunders lost 35-9.

SOUTHBOURNE

Nyetimber Gold 53 Southbourne Rovers 31

Southbourne Rovers lost away to Nyetimber Gold in south-west division two of the West Sussex Winter League. On one mat Southbourne had a close and competitive game but lost narrowly – but the other loss was more comprehensive.

Scores: Mary Thornton, Kathy Shelley, Dave Young & Pete Jasinski (s) lost 26-22; Joan Frost, Colin Bulbeck, Pete Garrard & John Staker (s) lost 27-9.

LAVANT

Lavant Green visited Crablands Bitterns and suffered a loss – 22-12 on one mat and 27-14 on the second. The friendly was hard-fought, Lavant losing 29-28.

Away to Chilgrove, in the first leg of three triples matches, Lavant won 40-17.

Lavant Green went to face Walberton Blue. On mat one they won 20-17 but on mat two it was 28-17 to Walberton. The friendly ended 21-4 to Lavant.

Lavant Blue visited Crablands Cormorants but lost 27-15 on mat one and 32-11 on mat two. The friendly to Lavant finished 39-11.

NYETIMBER

Nyetimber visited Crablands in the league but lost on both mats, with Crablands gaining all six points.

Mat one lost 27-19, mat two lost 28-15 but on the friendly mat, Nyetimber won 20-17.

FITTLEWORTH

An eight-end match was played between the club’s men and ladies to decide the winner of the President’s Cup. The men won on all mats.
