Midhurst members bowled over by year’s success stories

Midhurst Bowling Club held their presentation dinner at Capron House which was attended by more than 50 members and guests.

Catherin Dixon, who had an outstanding season, received the ladies’ singles Pescod Cup from president Peter West.

Catherin also won the two-wood ladies’ singles, the Dixon Pearce ladies’ handicup and the outstanding league player trophy, having played in every league match and being on a losing rink only once. This was voted for by the team skips during the season.

She was also runner-up in the ladies’ pairs Isabel Cup.

David King received the men’s singles winners’ trophy, the Tatchel Cup, from Peter West. He was also in the winning men’s pairs team.

A lovely dinner and pleasant evening was enjoyed by all.

PETWORTH

Petworth BC celebrated promotion to Gazette League division two at their annual meeting and presentation evening at the club.

Though just pipped to the division-three title by Storrington in the last game, they look forward to their return to division two.

Captain Mick Monk reflected on a successful season for the club and thanked departing secretary Len McRae for his work. His role is being taken by Eileen Warrington and Denis Caisor.

INDOOR SCENE

West Sussex’s Premier and A teams hosted Kent in the inter-county championships – and it was the A team who were celebrating.

The Premier team, who started the day top on shot difference over Kent, started badly by losing all four games in the first session. But they fought back with three wins in the second session to trail 10-6 at lunch.

The third session produced only one win and with a win and a draw in the final session they ended up losing 27-13.

In the singles Infinity’s Chris Page lost 12-7 and 15-10. In the pairs Infinity’s Dan Blackman lost 15-14 and 15-9.

In the triples The Martlets’ combination of Chris Blackman, Mel Lillywhite and Marc Lancaster won 12-8 and lost 10-8. In the fours the Southbourne combination of Karen and Dave Alner and Robin Armstrong lost 13-4 and won 11-10 while the Lavant unit of John Simms, Peter Winter and Peter Whale won 9-4 and lost 20-7.

The A team, having lost at Kent at the start of the season, were looking for revenge and started well, taking seven of the eight points and with the points shared in the second session led 11-5 at lunch.

Kent won three of the four games in the third session but West Sussex held on to the bonus points in the singles and shared the bonus points in the pairs.

With the points shared in the final session and West Sussex taking the bonus points in the triples, the final result was a very satisfying win for West Sussex by 22-18.

In the singles Nyetimber’s Freddie Kaucher won 13-10 and lost 18-15. In the pairs Crablands’ Joyce Abel and Martin Hunt drew 12-12 and lost 20-7.

In the triples Southbourne’s John Hardy with Bognor’s Marlene Steel won 7-6 and 16-13 while Bognor’s Eric and Brenda Jones won 12-8 and 12-11.

In the fours Southbourne’s Audrey and Rodney Bull with Lavant’s Dominic May lost 12-8 and 9-6 while Lavant’s Ray Harding, the Martlets’ Ivan Salmon, Bognor’s Clive Andrews and Southbourne’s Dave Walter lost 9-4 and 13-6.

ARUN

Egham 115 Arun Ladies 128

Arun ladies were the victors after a very close match.

Arun made further Yetton Trophy progress after defeating Worthing Pavilion in the first round.

Scores: Iris Brooker, Sheila Stocker, Sue Miles and Gill Conley won 20-12; Daphne Anderson, Bridget Collins, Betty Spicer and April Janman won 29-17; Chris Hobbs, Margaret Phillips, Denise Latter and Carol Bowles won 32-5; Eileen Fitch, June Taffurelli, Sue Judd and Marion Richards won 16-15.

In the second round of the Egham Mixed Trophy, Arun came up against strong opponents from Preston IBC. At the end of a close game,

Arun were 89-65 victors.

DONNINGTON

SIX teams took part in the club’s internal round-robin Captain’s Shield competition, arranged by captain Maggie Maggs.

After some very close-fought matches, the overall winners by four shots were Sue Coley, Trevor Wilson and Terry Haigh.

Donnington struggled to find form on both mats. Eventually M Maggs, D Turner, P Skinner and P Whale managed to pull away to win 27-21, but S Coley, S Baverstock, C Hulbert and T Haigh lost 35-12.

MIDHUST

Midhurst Eagles played away to Norfolk Cubs in a league match. It was close-fought but Norfolk came out winners by two shots.

Scores: A Carn, A Knight, B Fallows, T Berry lost 25-22; L Mercer, S Weeks, R Carn, R Weeks won 20-19.

CRABLANDS

Crablands Bitterns hosted Norfolk Cubs and gained all six points.

HUNSTON

Hunston visited Crablands and lost 64-45.

FITTLEWORTH

Fittleworth won a league match at home to Arundel Mullets, taking four points.

Scores: Audrey Hodgson, Gina Barnfield, David Luxford, Bernard Adsett lost 25-13; Monica Enticknap, Alvar Etherington, Sue Judd Charlie Martin won 33-13.
