Mike's long TV career

TELEVISION commentary is in its own right a skilled art and those involved must know both horse and rider along with their backgrounds. Live commentary can throw in the unexpected and situations can arise that can alter the entire programme with a need to be totally on the ball

Mike Tucker has long been associated with the world of equestrian sport and is a familiar face at Hickstead. His charismatic voice makes the viewer feel relaxed whilst putting enthusiasm into every commentary.

Mike first came to Hickstead in the late seventies for the cross country race. which was a new venture for Douglas Bunn.

He told me: "At that stage in my life I was involved in a small amount of commentary work for the BBC on eventing so they though it would be a nice link.

"I even raced in this event a couple of years later riding for the Duke of Beaufort's team. I have to admit I was petrified riding towards the daunting Sussex rails and was even more delighted when we won it."

"Following that I started to do the odd day's commentary at Hickstead and when Raymond Brooks Ward sadly died in 1992 I was asked to do more show jumping, so becoming part of the official BBC team in 1993. Eventing was my first love.
