With nine races under their belt and a home race to look forward to on Sunday (June 23), the ladies team from the Heathfield Road Runners remain firmly in first place in the Sussex Grand Prix women’s league table.

They lead the series with 15,238 points, 1,569 ahead of Horsham Joggers ladies who reside in second with 13,669 points, and Arunners AC ladies in third with 12,420.

A number of rapid performances were recently unleashed by Heathfield at the Worthing 10k, which was held on Wednesday June 5.

The starting gun was fired on a cool and bright evening, providing ideal conditions for the competitors to deliver fast times in the two lap road race.

Bev Chapman and Julia D’Albiac led the team home with season-best times of 42.40 (7th) and 47.06 (12th). Not far behind was Paulette Smith who smashed her PB by more than two minutes with a time of 49.40 (18th).

Ladies also running for Heathfield were: Sharon Saunders (50.54, 25th), Jude Elston (53.39, 30th), Fleur Blanford (59.10, 46th) and Michelle Spates (61.03, 53rd).

Next in the Grand Prix series is the Heathfield Midsummer 10k, which also marks the halfway point for the season, the 10th out of 20 races.

Heathfield ladies will look to field another full team and extend their lead in what is becoming another very competitive year for the Sussex teams.

The Heathfield men’s team, however, have some catching up to do, as they are currently languishing in 11th place.
