Nick Brown hailed his young Rooks stars after Lewes U18s beat Sussex rivals Burgess Hill Town to lift the Sussex County Youth Cup last week.

Lewes U18s are the Youth Champions of Sussex after winning the County Cup last Thursday night in a 3-1 win over Burgess Hill at Lancing.

Kaleem Luthra gave Lewes an early lead, which Jordan Stubbings doubled before half time. The Hillians pulled one back on the hour through Lee Harding, which led to an uncomfortable end to the game as Hill pushed for an equaliser.

But Stubbings popped up with another goal in the last 10 minutes to ensure Lewes could enjoy the end of the game.

This is only the fourth time that Lewes has won this trophy and the first time since 2009.

Rooks U18s manager Brown – who is also Simon Wormull’s assistant manager in the club’s first team set-up – said: “I’m very proud of them. The games between us and Burgess Hill are always very close so we were expecting a tight game.

“We were very strong on set pieces and also very strong at the back. Being 2-0 up at the break, they came back very strongly at in the second half, but we deserved the win. With the chances we had we could have won more comfortably: we hit the bar twice and had about three or four one-on-ones with their keeper.”

Lewes FC said: “Huge congratulations to Manager Nick Brown and his fantastic team.”

Lewes’ 1st XI game with Margate on Tuesday fell foul of the heavy snowfall that fell over the South East early in the week. The Rooks are away to Cray Wanderers tomorrow (Saturday) with the next game at the Pan being this Tuesday (March 19) in a 7.45pm kick off with the rescheduled game against Carshalton. The first game was abandoned a fortnight ago due to floodlight failure. Because that was abandoned at half time, Rooks chiefs have said fans can ‘pay what they like’ to get in.

Lewes will be presenting three Lewes Ladies with certificates at the men’s game with Hastings on March 30 in recognition of 250+ appearances for the Ladies side.

The players are Rookettes captain Kelly Newton, Lel Smith and Clare Trafford.

U18s: Matthews, Ozga, Hendon, Kay, K. Brown, Black, Luthra, Marsh (James 69), Stubbings (Shelton 88), Madhani (Connor 74), Marshall. Unused Subs: Fender, Morris.
