Robertsbridge Community College is basking in the glory of winning the county stage in a national badminton competition.
The college’s key stage three girls’ team was crowned Sussex champions in the Center Parcs National Schools’ Championships.
After winning the area round, the Robertsbridge squad of Molly Thomson, Zara Hyland, Grace Sheppard, Emily Reeves and Tallulah Jacobs travelled to Haywards Heath for the county stage.
The eight competing teams were split into two pools of four with the winners from each playing in a final to determine the winners and who would progress to the regional stage.
Robertsbridge got off to a strong start with a comprehensive 5-0 win against Chatsmore Catholic High School followed by a 4-1 victory against Uckfield Community College.
The final group game ended with another 5-0 victory, this time against St Wilfreds, to secure top spot in the group and a place in the final.
Tanbridge House were the opponents in the final after they had progressed from a tough group on another court.
The match was level at 1-1 after the first two games and the teams remained locked together at 2-2 after another two very closely-fought matches, meaning the outcome hinged on the final doubles game.
A strong performance from the Robertsbridge girls ended with a 21-10 victory to win the match 3-2 and be crowned county champions.
The team is now looking forward to the regional finals in Guildford after the half term break when a place in the national finals will be up for grabs.
