David Manktellow is Lewes Golf Club’s Seniors Champion for 2014 - by the narrowest of margins.
The final leader board on Seniors’ Championship day saw David and eventual runner-up Tony Grainger locked together at the top in both the scratch and handicap competitions - both playing off a 15 handicap, and both having gone round in 83 strokes for identical nett scores of 68, for 39 Stableford points.
But it was David who was awarded first prize, by a whisker, using the countback system.
Club Captain Ian Newman finished third in this event, taking one shot more for 35 points. Eric Cramp was fourth, also on 35, but took the prize for the best score by an ‘over 75’. Roy Waghorne came second in this category with 33 points.
The day before, captain Newman had hosted the ladies’ section in their Club Captain’s Prize Day where Mel Boyse took the main honours with 39 points, closely followed by Mandy Hilton (38) and Ellen Dunne (35).
There were prizes too for Rosemary Wadsworth (Best Front Nine) and Pat Mullins (Best Back Nine), as well as ‘Nearest the Pin’ awards for Ladies Captain Claudine Lower and for Jean Hardy – one of the sections newest members, winning her first ever prize.
In other club competitions, David Llewellyn won the latest round of the Seniors’ Eclectic series with 40 points, just ahead of Christian von Rautenkranz, 39, and Ray Eggleton, who was one of four competitors to finish on 38.
