Hailsham 1 finished their season in Sussex Premier Division with a hard-earned 3-2 victory against third in table Brighton 2s.
Hailsham pressured Brighton defence early, with forwards Sue Cable, Susie Smith and Katie James (back from illness) all linking up well. Brighton held, rallied and scored on the break but Hailsham have learnt to stay calm under pressure and linked up again through mid-field, forcing a penalty corner.
The initial strike was saved, but forward Michelle Page pounced on the rebound and stuck the ball ferociously into top right of goal. Brighton struggled to regain their composure and allowed Hailsham to attack at pace, with on-form Sarah Haird slotting the ball home to make it 2-1 at half-time.
The second half started with Hailsham player of the match Smith making an amazing solo run and beating the keeper to put Hailsham 3-1 up. Brighton responded by pushing everybody up and attacking at pace, but the Hailsham defence and keeper Julie Abson held Brighton at bay until 5 minutes from full time.
This proved to be the final goal of the game, the victory leaving Hailsham seventh in Division, and costing Brighton third place to the benefit of Lewes 2s.
